I understand that I will draw my remarks with this 'the wrath of the "purists" of the publication, even if I hope, once you read the post, can at least turn up a little' less than the nose prorpio prove me right.
First, for the uninitiated, let's define what 'the Book On Demand (BOD) and Print On Demand (POD).
The first and essential difference between the BOD POD and 'in the definition of "book" itself. The BOD release a book in all respects with cataloged and entered in the register of books (ISBN, and that 'the numerical code used internationally for the classification of books. It is defined by an ISO standard, derived from standard English SBN 1967.Ogni ISBN identifies an edition of a book - not the simple reprints), while the POD printing a book without ISBM code, then (Pass me the term) much more 'at the Amateur. Another distinction to be made (especially in the BOD, but not only) and 'between operators / publishers that require a certain number of printed copies (having a financial investment by the original authors) and operators / publishers that do not require a set number of prints so without seeking any contribution to the author (in this case but 'there are often agreements that bind the author to distribute / release of the book itself for a period of time).
As I said before the "purists" do not like the BOD, 'cause in this way anyone can' print anything, good or bad, interesting or not, educated or not ... well, it is often said that with the BOD print "dogs and pigs" . Well, I wonder ... What 'wrong with that? If a person has a dream, if a person succeeds in its intent, because 'deny them? The problem 'if the author believes that his work may be the new Best Sellers and if he believed the new Brawn Tolkinen or Dan, the new Ungaretti, Quasimodo, Manzoni or Dante.
Unfortunately these days of emerging authors, publishers that point, without pushing and only as a "bet" there are fewer or perhaps they do for "niches" and "genres" in particular. Often much depends on the "taste" of who reviews the work, however, do not forget that a publisher tends to gain from what 'public and if it does not provide a "return" it is difficult to transform' in the patron. (For a list of publishers BOD and DO NOT DO NOT pay you to refer to the site http://www.writersdream.org/ )
Personally I think the truth 'lies somewhere in between and' is often true that those who want to be "printed" has the presumption that he had written a work of art but it 'also true that those who "prints" it only wants to "play safe".
Coming back to the original I said, that there is' bad to realize a dream? I think no one, and the important 'to have the right dose of humility' to recognize their limitations and "fly low" in the claims.
Not to mention that those who print via the BOD POD or do not usually have any kind of publicity ', push, review, distribution, editing, graphics etc etc etc.
Maybe someone in this way, however, "breaks through" (I can think Eragorn which 'was printed in 2002 by parents of their own "little" writer before becoming a publishing), but many are forced to remain in a limbo of prejudice and sufficiency.
Personally, I printed my book with the BOD, I have not reached (yet) my target "minimal" sales (50 copies, excluding gifts), but I can not say I was "getting bad".
Do not consider myself a poet, do not consider myself "good". I only dream of having a "my book" and that could be on the shelf or in the bedside of someone who was not me.
I did the book in a hurry and jet, should I ever make a second ... it will take a lot more 'calm, I gave in to a big meal before "BOD" and then to a small international and national (almost ... I have two books equal but different), I tried to get a little 'of advertising' with friends, relatives and acquaintances, I received some critical appreciation and a few more views in a constructive way.
I want more '? SOME! I do not hide, I'd push a little '... than to have one (or more') sales and unexpected "unsolicited" but do not pretend to be "observed" and "put under contract" from a big house, I do not see myself present the book interviews on TV or the newspaper Corriere della Sera.
I would also like to add another consideration:
Who today (well yesterday) if you feel like investing in poetry?
Maybe there 'still qalcuno that risks with science fiction, fantasy, gothic, horror ... the discovery of a new Stephen King or Asimov or Chricton ... but honestly who starts out trying the new Quasimodo, Ungaretti, Montale?
Much more 'profitable to do write books to DJ, VJ, and viados Veline .... (Some of which have quietly admitted that he had never read anything I wrote ... and so 'by accident) that have market!
Finally I would like to point out, however, publishers of the BOD POD and I found on http://31ottobre.blogspot.com

Using
the window as a canvas,
sketch
a rainbow,
leaves, flowers,
blue sky
and clouds.
I cover my eyes,
the soul
the gray of winter,
until 'is not open
its doors
and cold
rewinds
life.
